The Danites

If one tries, it is not hard to imagine the wonder that must have been had for the colonies at the time Sherlock Holmes was published. It was a frontier, the edge of the ‘civilised’ world. From there came adventure, wonder and excitement. Even the cultures of the colonials were shaping into an exotic and strange oddity. And not least among these was Mormonism and the Danites; a fundamentalist militia within Mormonism that has the special privilege among religious groups to have been excommunicated by the holy founder himself. Mormonism was seen as a bizarre group. Based on the discoveries claimed by Joseph Smith in Missouri, self-styled prophet of Mormonism, the religion is based on new writings that add to the Christian traditions. Why would Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a Scotchman living in London, write a story about an American Mormon community in the first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet?  We asked this question from Jean Upton and Roger Johnson from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and Bishop David Hooson from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our next episode about the Sherlockian fan culture and London sight seeing for Sherlock is coming out in a couple of weeks. The podcast episodes are published in this blog and you can also subscribe through iTunes or the RSS feed here.

A Study in Scarlet opens next March

09 Dec 2013, Posted by Leo in A Study in Scarlet

Tacit Theatre return to Southwark Playhouse in March with our brand new adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective classic. A young and ambitious Holmes at the outset of his career meets a war-ravaged, disenchanted Watson – discharged from the army after the horrors of the Afghan war – aimlessly floating around London and fast running out of money. A gruesome discovery in a derelict house in Camberwell sets them on a trail of intrigue and revenge, which leads through Victorian London’s murky underbelly across the world to a Mormon settlement in Utah. Join Holmes and Watson as they take their first steps together towards becoming one of literature’s most iconic duos. Our new production features an original score, live music, immersive design and an ensemble cast of actor-musicians.
